EAN-Barcodes erklärt: Warum der Ländercode trügerisch ist

EAN Barcodes Explained: Why the Country Code Can Be Deceptive

📅 July 8, 2026 ⏱️ Reading time: approx. 4 minutes ✍️ By EuroScan Editorial

When shopping, many consumers rely blindly on the first digits of the barcode. If they see "400" to "440," the product is assumed to be "German." However, this system has a catch: the country code only reveals where the registration took place, not who pockets the profits.

What is the GS1 Prefix?

The 13-digit EAN (European Article Number) is the standard printed on our food packaging. The first three digits are assigned by the global standardization organization GS1. Country prefixes like 400-440 (Germany), 900 (Austria), or 760 (Switzerland) merely indicate which **country organization** registered the number for the company.

Crucial Info: GS1 explicitly states that these prefixes do not provide reliable information about the actual country of manufacture or the headquarters of the parent corporation.

Two Major Misconceptions

1. **Production Outsourcing**: A European traditional brand manufactures its goods cheaply in overseas factories. The packaging still carries the local EAN prefix because the trademark and barcode registrations remain in Europe.

2. **Corporate Ownership**: A product is processed and packaged in a local dairy and carries a local barcode. However, if this dairy is owned by a US multinational corporation, the economic returns flow away from Europe and end up at foreign holding companies.

How EuroScan Decodes the Truth

EuroScan goes beyond basic GS1 prefix matching. Our engine analyzes both the prefix registration country and **brand ownership structures**. A scan evaluates products into three distinct classes: Green indicates European manufacture and European ownership. Orange indicates uncertain or global parentage, and Red indicates overseas ownership.
